This sandwich is typically made with meat, vegetables, herbs, and a baguette. Here's a Mi recipe:
Ingredients:
1 large baguette, sliced lengthwise
1/2 lb of chicken or beef (thinly sliced)
1/2 cup of soy sauce
1/4 cup of honey
1/4 cup of rice vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 pepper
1/2 ginger
1/2 cinnamon
1/4 cloves
1/4 pepper flakes
1/4 cup of mayonnaise
2 tablespoons of Sriracha sauce
1 small cucumber, thinly sliced
1 small carrot, shredded
1/4 cup of fresh cilantro leaves
1 jalapeno pepper, thinly sliced
Instructions:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, minced garlic, black pepper, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and red pepper flakes. Add the sliced chicken or beef to the bowl, toss to coat, and marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator.
Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove the chicken or beef from the marinade, discard the marinade, and grill the meat until cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side.
In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and Sriracha sauce to create a spicy mayo spread.
To assemble the Banh Mi, spread the spicy mayo on the bottom half of the baguette. Add the sliced cucumber, shredded carrot, cilantro leaves, and jalapeno pepper. Top chicken or beef.
Cut the sandwich into individual portions and serve immediately.
