Bakso is a beloved Indonesian dish that has gained popularity not only within the country but also internationally. Bakso refers to meatballs made from ground meat, typically beef, and served in a flavorful broth with noodles, vegetables, and various condiments. In this article, we will provide you with a guide to making bakso from scratch, along with some delicious recipes to enjoy this classic Indonesian comfort food.
1. Guide to Making Bakso:
Here's a step-by-step guide to preparing bakso:
Ingredients:
For the meatballs:
- 500g ground beef (you can also use a combination of beef and chicken)
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 tablespoons tapioca flour or cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 egg
- Ice cubes (optional, for texture)
For the broth and serving:
- Beef or chicken broth (homemade or store-bought)
- Cooked noodles (rice noodles or egg noodles)
- Chopped scallions (green onions)
- Fried shallots
- Sliced celery
- Fried or boiled dumplings (optional)
- Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) or chili sauce (sambal), for serving
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, minced garlic, salt, white pepper, tapioca flour or cornstarch, soy sauce, and egg. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated. For a bouncy texture, you can add a handful of ice cubes to the mixture and knead until they melt.
2. Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking and shape the meat mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
3. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop the meatballs into the boiling water and cook until they float to the surface, which indicates they are cooked through. Remove the cooked meatballs from the pot and set them aside.
4. In a separate pot, heat the beef or chicken broth until it simmers. Season the broth with salt and pepper to taste.
5. To serve, place a portion of cooked noodles in a bowl. Add the meatballs, sliced celery, chopped scallions, and fried shallots on top. Pour the hot broth over the ingredients.
6. Serve the bakso with sweet soy sauce or chili sauce on the side for additional flavor.
